A futuristic city resembling a scene from a science fiction film is set to be built in Saudi Arabia. This ambitious city, known as NEOM, will stretch 170 km in length, taller than the Eiffel Tower, standing at 500 meters. It will be merely 200 meters wide, featuring huge mirror panels on its exterior, surrounded by greenery and advanced futuristic technologies. The estimated cost for constructing this grand project is said to be up to 1 trillion dollars, with Saudi Arabia aiming to complete it by 2045. But the question remains: is such a colossal project truly feasible? In this blog, we will explore the advantages, disadvantages, and potential impacts of this innovative design on the world.
When thinking of Saudi Arabia, deserts and oil quickly come to mind. However, the country boasts a diverse geography, including savannas, mountains, and volcanic fields, with more than 2000 dormant volcanoes, some of which are active. Economically, Saudi Arabia is the largest economy in the Middle East and the 18th largest globally. Nevertheless, its economy is heavily reliant on oil exports, prompting the nation to explore opportunities for diversification. The Saudi Vision 2030 initiative aims to develop various sectors, such as health, education, infrastructure, tourism, and non-oil exports, driving the creation of the NEOM smart city.
NEOM is not merely a solitary smart city. In reality, this designation should be applied to an expansive zone. Numerous cities, resorts, and various developments will flourish within this expanse. All combined, the total area of NEOM will encompass approximately 26,500 km² . Situated in the northwestern part of Saudi Arabia, near the Red Sea, NEOM's choice of location is strategic due to its comparatively moderate climate compared to the hotter desert regions.
The term "NEOM" itself is intriguing, a fusion of "Neo," derived from Ancient Greek, meaning "New," and "M," representing both the name of the Saudi Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman, and the Arabic word "Mustaqbal," meaning "Future." NEOM envisions an ideal city showcasing a new and innovative future.
NEOM comprises ten different projects, referred to as regions. Four of these regions have already been unveiled:
• OXAGON: An octagon-shaped floating port, serving as the next-generation industrial center of NEOM.
• TROJENA: The Arabian Peninsula's first major outdoor skiing destination, set to be inaugurated in 2026, located on one of Saudi Arabia's highest mountain ranges.
• SINDALAH: A luxury resort complex outside the city's coast, spread over 840,000 m² and capable of hosting around 2,400 people. This will be the first part of NEOM open to the public, set to open in 2024.
• The Line: Perhaps the most ambitious project, The Line spans a staggering 170 km. It will be situated between two 500-meter-tall skyscrapers, designed linearly and adorned with exterior mirrors. The Line is inspired by the concept of Arcology, aiming to create a densely populated area with minimal environmental impact, featuring "Zero Gravity Urbanism" for three-dimensional movement and 100% renewable energy sources.
Despite its grand vision, several challenges cast doubt on The Line's realization. The primary challenge lies in funding, as the project requires massive investment and is subject to fluctuations in the oil-based Saudi economy. While Saudi Arabia's Sovereign Wealth Private Investment Fund holds significant capital, foreign investors may be needed to secure the estimated $1 trillion cost. However, attracting such investments has proven difficult so far.
Technological hurdles also stand in the way. The high-speed transportation system, which aims to transport people across the 170 km Line in just 20 minutes, relies on technologies that are yet to be developed. Additionally, creating 500-meter-high mirrors and constructing a city covered in glass raise practical challenges and environmental concerns, as the project's sustainability claims may not align with its environmental footprint.
Moreover, The Line's architectural design, while space-saving, could lead to inefficiencies, with the entire city dependent on a single transportation route, risking significant disruptions in case of issues. The isolated and monitored nature of The Line's environment could also be perceived as less habitable, akin to a science fiction dystopia, raising questions about people's willingness to reside in such a setting.
In light of these challenges and the previous abandonment of other grand projects, there remains a high likelihood that The Line may remain an ambitious dream rather than a tangible reality. Time will tell whether this futuristic vision becomes a part of our world or remains a visionary concept.
